What are the main methods of ESD protection?

1. Grounding

Grounding is crucial for reducing the electrostatic charges generated on conductors. The human body is a conductor and is a primary source of static electricity. Therefore, we must minimize the electrostatic charges generated on individuals who come into contact with sensitive anti-static components or assemblies. The best way to prevent static electricity buildup on the human body is through personal grounding. Common grounding methods for conductors include wearing anti-static wrist straps and grounding work surfaces.

 

2. Electrostatic shielding

Electrostatic sensitive components are exposed to areas with static electricity during storage or transportation. The impact of external static electricity on electronic components can be mitigated by using electrostatic shielding methods. The most common method is to use electrostatic shielding bags for protection.

3. Ion neutralization

Since grounding and isolation cannot release charges from insulators, neutralization becomes crucial. Neutralizing or removing the naturally occurring charges from insulators during manufacturing processes is called ionization. Ions are simply charged substances that exist in the air, generated by natural energy sources such as sunlight, lighting, open flames, and radiation. We can artificially generate trillions of ions through ionizers, which use high voltage to produce a balanced mixture of charged ions and use fans to help the ions drift onto objects or into areas for neutralization. Ionization can neutralize electrostatic charges on insulators within eight seconds, thus reducing the potential harm they may cause. Ionization is not a substitute for grounding or isolation; it merely reduces the likelihood or risk of electrostatic discharge accidents. The most commonly used ion neutralization equipment includes ion fans and ion air guns.
